Puzzles have long been a source of motivation for the exploration of mathematical concepts, theory, and computation. Multimedia adventure games with creative storylines, movies, sophisticated graphics, and sound, are the modern context for both new and classic puzzles. We will show how some of these puzzles can be modeled with directed graphs and the resulting mathematical work can be carried out with nothing more than a computer spreadsheet. You have to download the following files: Adventure Games, Permutations and Spreadsheets-text Adventure Games, Permutations and Spreadsheets-software Adventure Games, Permutations and Spreadsheets-software overview |

| Students in participating classes vote weekly for five weeks on a new Favorite: Pet; Holiday; Sport; School Subject; Food. The data is compiled separately for boys and for girls in the class and sent to the project coordinator. The coordinator compiles the results on a Clarisworks 4.0 spreadsheet and e-mails the spreadsheet, or a PICt file of the spreadsheet to all participants for further analysis. Data may be posted on a WWW site for reference. Each class uses the data as their instructor decides. The open-ended nature of this project allows for participation by diverse groups. | |

| Directions: In each square put the solution to the row and column problem (if the row number is 3 and the column number is 6 and the math function is + [addition], then the answer for that locations is the sum of 3+6 and you would enter a 9 in the square). The game will create a table that is 10X10 maximum size (you get to define it yourself!) with the starting row and column numbers being what you entered. So, if you enter 1 in the column, the columns will be the number 1-10 (maximum). If you enter a -5 as the row start number, the rows will be -5 to 4 (maximum). This allows you to do more complex problems like subtraction of two negative numbers. This game is offered with the addition (+), subtraction (-) and multiplication (*) functions currently. Each game is timed, so you know how long it took to answer the 100 questions, and scored, so you know how many you got right and how many were missed. If you don't know an answer, just leave the square blank (it will be counted as a missed answer). | |

Cool Site! This drill allows three types of games.
Making Change and Piggy Bank Breakin both have additional features that can be set before the game begins. The "Complexity" field has to do with number size. We want younger kids to feel comfortable, so the "Simple" mode uses coins only. The "Coin Images" field allows for coin images to be displayed next to the problems so that the kids can relate Dime to being one of these . |
